  1. Big Read: Fort Sumner/ Bosque Redondo Historic Site: The Past, Present, and Future

    March 4, 2021, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM @ Online

Presented by Park Ranger Rebekha Crockett. Description: Fort Sumner was established in 1864 as the military control center of an internment camp for the N’de (Mescalero Apache) and Diné (Navajo). Approximately 10,000 people were force-marched to what became known as the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation and held as prisoners of war for four long years. This lecture, given by a Fort Sumner Park Ranger, will discuss the events that lead to the internment of these two tribes, the hardships they experienced, and Bosque Redondo Memorial’s role in interpreting and sharing this dark chapter of New Mexico’s and America’s history with the public.
