Nuestra Gente is a series of articles, once a month, to profile various employees at the Las Cruces Utilities (LCU).
Why did you decide to join the LCU?
In one word…Opportunity. I had worked in my hometown as a County Manager before joining LCU. After 10 years of balancing politics and citizen needs, I was ready for new challenges - and my family wanted the chance to spread their wings too. We had a few criteria: not too far from my aging parents and in a University town with lots of educational and recreational opportunities. Las Cruces was, and has been, perfect.
What is something about you that we wouldn’t really know?
I love to craft and sew quilts (though I’ve not made a single quilt since moving). I also like (not love) gardening and I’m a bit of a prepper. My kids call me Auntie Entity (from Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome) to reel me back in when I get a little too crazy.
Do you have a favorite memory?
I have lots but two stand out most. First, walking a well-drilling site - the nerd in me was excited for days over that. The second was our walk-through banquet; I was so excited to finally meet so many of our associates face-to-face and say thank you for everything. This team has been amazing through the pandemic – despite all the challenges we’ve faced, our customers never experienced loss of service due to COVID.
Why did you decide to join the LCU team?
I had wanted to come to work for the City of Las Cruces for a long time, but job openings were rare and far between. I had over 11 years of private consulting experience in design and project management of water/wastewater and a tiny bit of gas, but I felt I had become fully sufficient in that function and was ready for a new challenge and continued professional growth.
When the Utilities Project and Water Rights Manager position with Utilities opened, I thought to myself, “Why not, I could do that job and get a foot in with the City for new and exciting challenges?” I’m so grateful that I was hired and given the opportunity to contribute to the community, continue to grow professionally, and have exciting new challenges. I’ve been with LCU for over 15 years.

When projects were under construction, on a couple of Fridays a month, the then Director Jorge Garcia, Water Resources Administrator Gilbert Morales, and I would go out to the field to see the status of the project. They always made me drive.
Once we got a flat tire, both Jorge and Gilbert worked to get the tire off and the spare on, then turned to me and told me to put my fair share of the work in to tighten the lug nuts. Later, I found a printed photo on my office door of me doing that work. They told everyone they made me do all the work. It was quite funny. We had good times in the field.
