[ARCHIVED] Way to go Las Cruces!

Various people using the City’s trail system

Various people using the City’s trail system were surprised recently when they were awarded T-shirts that acknowledged they were exercising responsibly during the pandemic.

The Parks & Recreation Department Athletics section recently rewarded active community members, who are making outdoor exercise a priority, while adhering to social distancing guidelines by wearing masks when exercising, practicing social distancing, and avoiding large groups, with an “Actively Isolated” T-shirt, commemorating their good behavior.

The T-shirts, printed with text saying “Way to Go!” on the front and “Actively Isolated” on the back, were presented to users of trails on Triviz Drive, La Llorona Park, Sonoma Ranch Boulevard, Legends West, the Las Cruces Dam and hikers and bikers at Picacho Peak Trails by staff as a token of encouragement and appreciation for following safe practices. A flyer with safety tips to reduce the spread of COVID-19 was included with each T-shirt.

A regular exercise routine can be difficult to follow during the coronavirus pandemic. Getting outdoors to go for a walk, bike ride or hike is an effective way to get in some exercise while still adhering to social distancing guidelines. Here are a few benefits to outdoor exercise:

  • Lifts mood
  • Helps manage weight
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Strengthens bones/muscles
  • Reduces depression/anxiety
  • Lowers stress
  • Increases immunity
  • Improves sleep and brain function

The Parks and Recreation Department encourages community members to continue staying active and healthy while being safe.
