Take-Out STEM Activity Kits Available from the Museum of Nature and Science

Kids exploring the moon

While the Museum of Nature & Science remains closed due to public health mandates, museum programming will continue in September with activity kits. The STEM kits are free to pick up but require reservation to ensure sufficient supply and are available only while supplies last. To reserve a kit please contact Stephanie at shawkins@las-cruces.org or call 575-522-3120.

Pursuant to state health guidelines, when picking up STEM kits, remember social distancing and mask-wearing is required.

September 2 “Saturday Family Science”
Work together to explore static electricity by building an electroscope. Recommended ages 6 and up. This program will be accompanied by a video at www.facebook.com/lcmuseums on September 5.

September 9 “Nature & Science Discovery Pre-K”
Explore the moon and stars with the Planeteers pack! The kit will include materials for two space science activities. Recommended for ages 2-5. This program will be accompanied by a video at www.facebook.com/lcmuseums on September 10 and 24.

September 16 –“Family STEM Night –DinoRAMA” 
Learn how scientists and artists work together to create dynamic landscapes for dinosaur exhibits.
Combine what you learn with your imagination to design a 3-dimensional, miniature paleo-landscape based on fossil evidence. Recommended for all ages. Limit1 per household.

September 23 “All About Pollinators” 
Learn how bees pollinate plants, make your own butterfly feeder, and receive a quick guide to some of the pollinator species that call Las Cruces home. Recommended for all ages.

 September 23–“STEAMpunk”

Discover the stories behind science’s greatest heroes and explore the applications of their research through hands-on explorations and discussions. Friedrich Mohs developed a scale that helps geologists identify minerals based on how hard they are. Test minerals from a small sample set and see if you can identify them based on how hard they are. Recommended for ages 6-10. Limit 1 per household. This program will be accompanied by a video at www.facebook.com/lcmuseums on September 26. The Museum of Nature & Science is located at 411 N.
