The New Mexico Tourism Department (NMTD) has announced that the City of Las Cruces Keep Las Cruces Beautiful (KLCB) program is one of only 37 recipients that have been awarded a New Mexico Clean and Beautiful Grant. The grant is given to local governments to help develop and sustain programs that curb litter, reduce blight, and support beautification, recycling and education initiatives. The funds of this year’s grant award will help during this time of COVID-19 pandemic to adapt beautification projects, events, and educational programs to comply with safe practices.

“We have seen community volunteers do informal clean ups during this shutdown,” said James Woods, Coordinator for KLCB. “Our community truly cares about the beautification of our city, and we are grateful that NMTD recognizes our commitment and provides us the resources to support these positive opportunities.”

State Cabinet Secretary Jen Paul Schroer said, “Our outdoor spaces are incredibly valuable outlets as people look for ways to recreate while social distancing. This grant program empowers communities and equips them with resources they need to Keep New Mexico True for residents and visitors alike."

The New Mexico Clean and Beautiful Grant recipients include municipal, county, and tribal governments that pledge to Keep New Mexico True through environmental stewardship. The KLCB umbrella covers Adopt-a-Spot program, Meet Up to Clean Up city district events, Toss No Mas statewide cleanup event, Great American Clean Up nationwide cleanup event, graffiti abatement program, and “L.I.B.B.Y. the Green Dog” education initiative.

Currently, KLCB wants to support community members in their volunteer efforts to clean up areas of the community. KLCB can supply trash bags, gloves, safety vests, and pick-up tools free of charge to anyone planning a voluntary clean-up. Supplies are available from 8 – 10 a.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at the Frank O’Brien Papen Community Center, 304 Bell. Ave. (near the corner of Bell Ave. & Linden Ave.). Look for the KLCB canopy. For more information about supplies or the KLCB program, contact James Woods, Keep Las Cruces Beautiful Coordinator at jwoods@las-cruces.orgor 575/312-0531.
