History of Migration: Searching for Safety, by Dr. Neil Harvey.
Thursday, September 10, 2020
Dr. Harvey will place current policy issues in historical perspective by looking at immigration policy on the US's southern border. He will present the goals, methods and results of undergraduate research on the nature and impacts of US immigration policies.
This National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates is a collaborative effort between NMSU and the University of Texas-El Paso.
His presentation will reflect on various consequences of immigration policy, such as how Operation Streamline undermines access to fair hearings of undocumented migrants, how deportation and the Migrant Protection Protocols have placed migrants and asylum seekers at great risk of harm, and how community solidarity efforts are developed and implemented by different jurisdictions. Our overall goal is to make visible the many ways in which migrants experience their search for safety.
Dr. Harvey is a Professor and Head of the Department of Government at New Mexico State University.
