We offer hikes for all levels. Rating levels and entry hikes have been established to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all the hikers.
Hiking Days & Times
Hikes typically depart in the mornings. Return time is dependent on hike distance and location.
Sign Up & Fees
Sign up and payment for hikes will be held the first Monday of each month at Frank O'Brien Papen Community Center. Fees vary according to hike location but typically range from $5 to $20.

Date: November 5
Destination: Devil’s Hall, Guadalupe Mountains National Park
Description: Moderate+ due to footing and possible short scrambles. The Devil's Hall Trail departs from the Pine Springs trail head and is 3.8 miles round-trip. After the first mile the trail enters a rocky wash which leads hikers to an impressive natural rock staircase leading to a "hallway" formed by steep canyon walls. Keep your fingers crossed that we catch the fall colors. In case of rain, we will be hiking an alternate trail because of flood risks in Devil’s Hall. This is an all-day trip, pack a lunch, snacks plus two liters of water. Departing Meerscheidt Recreation Center at 7:00 am, no guaranteed return time.

Destination: Rincon Petroglyphs
Description: Moderate+ up to 6 miles out and back trail. Up to 800 feet of elevation gain. Some slippery footing and small obstacles. Departing Meerscheidt Recreation Center at 8:00 am, pack a lunch and at least one liter of water, no guaranteed return time.

Destination: Valles Canyon
Description: Moderate+ ability level. Seven miles out and back with sun exposure, one non-technical obstacle and minimal elevation change. Follow Valles Canyon to look at petroglyphs from both the Jornada Mogollon and Apache people. Pack a lunch and two liters of water. Departing Meerscheidt Recreation Center at 8:00 am, no guaranteed return time.

Destination: Pena Blanca Walk
Description: Guest Speaker: Karl Laumbach, archaeologist and associate director for research and public education for Human Systems Research, Inc.Let’s talk about the tools, flakes and pottery shards left by the peoples who traveled through this area. Pack a lunch and two liters of water. Departing Meerscheidt Recreation Center at 8:00 am, no guaranteed return time.
Date: December 11
Destination: Sunset and Full Moon Hike! Picacho Peak
Description: Moderate. Four miles up and back, 1400-foot elevation gain. Some walking through sandy arroyos. This is a short but harder hike, we will be hiking up with the setting sun, watching the moon rise and coming down after dusk/dark. Headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries is mandatory! Pack a lunch and two liters of water. Departing Meerscheidt Recreation Center at 3:30 pm, no guaranteed return time.

Destination: Christmas Annual Baylor Pass to Aguirre Springs Campground
Description: Moderate +. 6.5 miles 1000+ elevation gain. Start at Baylor climb 3.5 miles to pass, White Elephant exchange at the top (wind allowing). Keep gifts under $15.00 and hiking related. The exchange is not required but should be fun! Then descend 3 miles to Aguirre Springs. This hike must be completed, as we will be dropped off at one side of the mountains and picked upon the other. Pack a lunch and two liters of water. Departing Meerscheidt Recreation Center at 8:00 am pick up at Aguirre 2:30 pm.

Destination: East Portillo Ridge
Description: Difficult+ due to distance, elevation gain and footing. Seven plus miles out and back, follow an old road and arroyo, then climb up to a saddle (off trail) looking east with views of Kilbourne Hole and Aden Crater. This is an all-day trip, pack plenty of water and lunch. Departing Meerscheidt Recreation Center at 8:00 am, no guaranteed return time.
