The Las Cruces Police Department is not accepting applications for cadets at this time. We tend to have one academy per year. When we accept applications for cadets, we advertise the position here, on the City’s Human Resources website and through our social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram). Keep watching those sites for the next opportunity.
LCPD is accepting applications for lateral transfers (current commissioned LEOs in good standing from other law enforcement agencies). For information on lateral transfers, email Lieutenant Joy Wiitala or at 575-528-4730. Current commissioned LEOs in good standing with their agency can apply here.
What It Takes to Be a Cadet
Applicants selected for a written and physical fitness tests must also submit a Personal History Statement and Physical Fitness Exam Waiver to the LCPD Academy. The Personal History Statement, Physical Fitness Exam Waiver and Primary Fitness Standards can be found online. The documents should be printed, completed, notarized and turned into the LCPD Academy as soon as possible.

Law Enforcement Training Academy
As a police recruit, you will receive training at our state accredited Law Enforcement Training Academy, including physical conditioning and a comprehensive curriculum of law enforcement instruction.
Personal History Statement
Applicants are given a comprehensive Personal History Statement (PDF) to complete which will be used for the background investigation. The following testing procedures must then be successfully completed:
- Background Investigation
- Complete Medical Examination
- Drug Screen
- Oral Review Board
- Polygraph Examination
- Psychological Examination and Interview
Once hired, police recruits attend the Las Cruces Police Academy; a State accredited Law Enforcement Training Academy. With an emphasis on physical conditioning, the recruit also receives instruction in a variety of law enforcement topics.
Upon graduation from the police academy, the new officer is assigned to a Field Training Officer (FTO) as part of the Field Training and Evaluation Program, a 14-week phase of on-the-job training. During this phase, the new officer is instructed and closely supervised by various FTOs. The new officer is on probationary status for one year from the date of graduation from the police academy.
