What's New!

Hello,

My name is Christine Y. Chavez, the new Las Cruces Water Conservation Coordinator.  I’m very excited about the opportunity to work with the community as well as my colleagues and local researchers to develop water conservation measures that are most effective with respect to our unique area.  Las Cruces has demonstrated early success in reducing our outdoor use and we will continue to try to do so, especially through the summer months as data has shown that there is nearly a two-fold increase in water use as compared to winter months.  Please continue to be aware of the watering restrictions in place and be able to identify what your monthly usage is on your utility bill.

On July 16th we will be offering a free irrigation efficiency workshop and starting on August 6th we will begin a “Lush and Lean” workshop series that has been acclaimed as one of the “Best in the West in Water Conservation Training” by the Bureau of Reclamation.  All of the workshops will be held at the Munson Sr. Center, 975 S. Mesquite St.  Please call 528-3549 for more information.  I invite you to join us and collaborate with other members of our community as well as professionals in the area with regard to xeriscape principles, utilizing compost, and efficient irrigation methods.

Other updates include the commencement of work on our “Lush and Lean” Demonstration Garden located just east of the Police Department on E. Picacho.   The project was made possible with funds provided by the Bureau of Reclamation Water Conservation Section and in kind services of the City of Las Cruces Parks, Facilities, and Utilities Departments and NMSU Plant and Environmental Science Dept. and Students.  Stop and take a look if you are in the area.

Lastly, I will be hosting a booth at the Las Cruces Farmer’s Market on Saturday July 25th.  I invite you to come by and say hello.  Again, I am genuinely excited about working with all of you on the continuing success of the Las Cruces Water Conservation Program.

Sincerely,

Christine Y. Chavez, Water Conservation Coordinator
