        Senior Programs will be Closed January 1st for New Years, January 18th for Martin Luther King Holiday and February 15th for President’s Day.

 

(PLEASE NOTE: In order to continue our projects that are funded in part under an agreement with the NCNMEDD, Area Agency on Aging, we are obliged to suggest donations. We are suggesting a $.25 donation for our weekly blood pressure and glucose clinics and a $.50 donation for each of our fitness and yoga classes.)

For the Love of Art

Annual Art Show @ Munson Center – February 16th – 19th, 2010.

WORKSHOPS:

WORKSHOP ON WILLS/TRANSFERRING PROPERTY AFTER DEATH

Provides basic legal information on how the title to real property, such as land and houses, and personal property, such as bank accounts and vehicles, transfers to other(s) after the death of the owner, and the basic difference between probate and non-probate property.  Held Thursday Feb. 25th, from 10 to 11am, Munson Center, by Estate Planning Attorney Kathy Blackett.  .

Prosthetics and Diabetes Shoes Workshop – Wednesday January 13th from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Eddie Zepeda will explain how you can obtain these items sometimes even for free.

The Importance and benefits of massage for the elderly – Tuesday January 26th from 10:00 – 12:30 p.m. Sue Styler LMT- will host a workshop and will be doing some free chair massages.

Find out about health alert systems – Thursday jan 26th from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Hearing aids and You! Thursday February 25th 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. learn how to take care for and maintain your hearing aids.

AARP Driver Safety Program

AARP Driver Safety Program (formerly known as 55 Alive Defensive Driving) will now be a 4 hour course only.  This program is still open to those drivers 50+ years of age and upon completion of the course will receive a certificateDepending on the insurance company, this certificate can qualify the participant for a percentage discount on insurance rates for three years.  Local facilities will still host classes on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Certified instructors will still be conducting the classes. AARP member fee:  $12.00 per person/non-member fee: $14.00 per person, paid at the door the day of class.  Please bring your AARP membership card, your driver’s license (if you don’t have this with you, you will not be allowed to take the class) and a pen or pencil.  You do not have to be an AARP member to take these classes.  However, if you would like to become a member, there is a form in the front of the DSP student handbook.  Looking forward to a safe 2009!  If you have questions, please call john Schmelzer, AARP coordinator at 541-5753.

Skilled Help Wanted

Senior Programs wants to display art in oak and acrylic display cabinets at the Eastside Community Center.  We are seeking cabinet makers willing to volunteer their services to build the cabinets.  Senior programs will supply all materials.  If you are a cabinet maker who is willing to donate your skills, please call Sally Schutte at 528-3017.

New Classes We Are Exploring

Do you have and interest in leather crafting?  We would like to explore the level of interest in a beginning leather crafting class.  The class would meet in the mornings for 2 hours, twice a week.  It would be taught by Tom Zimmerman who has volunteered to teach others what he has learned in past years.  Class size would be limited to 6 students.

 

Other classes we are exploring are:  shawl weaving, self defense and Tai Chi Chih

(Joy thru movement). 

New Classes at East Side – Starting in February for our next 10 week session we will be offering a new Greeting Card making Class – Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m.

Beginning Ceramics class – on Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

(we must have a minimum of 8 students to offer a class).

RSVP Community Connections:

You are invited to join the Retired/Senior Volunteer Program., by donating a few hours a week to help our community grow.  Make a difference doing fun things that include:

·          Assistant Pianist, for a group that performs weekly at nursing homes

·          Tutors from K-12, help our students to excel in their studies

·          Clerical, help at many types of program’s doing office tasks 

·          Join in the fun with NM State Games

·          Be an advocate for those that need someone to speak on their behalf

·          Make items that can be donated to various community program’s

·          Serve as a member of an organization, raise funds to help others

·          Have a trade that you can teach others

·          Deliver a hot meal to homebound elderly

·          Feel good about giving a few hours to make our community a healthy and enjoyable place for everyone.  All volunteer activities have flexible times and schedules
