Regular Programs
Swim Team
The Las Cruces Aquatic Team continues to practice daily at the City of Las Cruces Frenger Pool. The Swim Team is an excellent way to involve the community because it provides a place to refer children that have just progressed through the Lesson Levels. LCAT is also a target group for classes such as Lifeguard Training that we offer the community. Many Swim Team members have gone on to Lifeguard, teach, even coach other swimmers. People interested in LCAT may inquire about the program at Frenger Swimming Pool.
Water Fitness- Aquacise
This class is offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:45 to 6:30 pm. The purpose of water fitness classes is not only to offer a low impact cardio activity but also basic strength training. In an effort to promote a healthy balanced lifestyle, participants are weighed and taped once a month and progress is charted and tracked. They are also encouraged to watch calorie intake and walk on days they do not attend class.
Swimming Lessons
Winter Swimming Lessons are offered several times throughout the school season. They are offered twice a week for five weeks or they are offered on Saturdays only. Winter lessons are a great refresher for children to make sure that children do not lose what they have learned through the summer lessons.
Summer Swimming Lessons are offered in three sessions. Lesson Levels available are IPAP, Preschool and Levels One thru Six. Classes are offered Monday thru Friday for two weeks and range from one half hour to an entire hour in length depending on the Level. The instructor to student ratio is no more than one to every six kids. Each day the kids are taught a specific water safety lesson in addition to their swim lesson. Topics for the day could be anything from the importance of sunscreen to why it is important to swim with a buddy.
We also offer adult swimming lessons and one-on-one private lessons. Interested parties are taken off an ongoing list. For additional information or to get on the list, please contact Frenger Pool.
Summer Lunch Program
The City of Las Cruces offers a grant funded Summer Lunch Program. Each of the three City pools serves free, healthy lunches to children 18 and under throughout the summer. Aquatic staff is trained in food handling and nutrition and conducts the program at each site. This is an excellent way for staff to get to know local children as well as educate the public about nutrition at an early age.
Therapeutics
The Water Therapeutics is run by the City of Las Cruces Therapeutics Program. Once a week, the City opens the pool for an hour to local disabled citizens and their caregivers. The group uses the water to increase mobility and strength as well as encourage a fun type of exercise. The Therapeutic program is Fridays from 10am-11am.
Adaptive PE
Las Cruces Public Schools brings their special education groups to the pools during the school season several times a week. The program is designed to help these children with health and fitness as well as the day to day movement some of them have difficulty with. Approximately 50 students in addition to their instructors from multiple groups and schools around the city come to the pool each week. For information about the Adaptive PE program, please contact Las Cruces Public Schools.
Super Seniors
The Super Seniors Class is a low impact cardio/strength training water aerobics offered to community seniors by the City of Las Cruces Senior Center along with the Aquatics Program. The class is offered three times a week at a donation price for those registered through the senior center. The class is offered on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11am until noon. Participants must register with the Munson Senior Center to participate. The public is welcome to inquire and observe during the scheduled time.
Mommy/Daddy and Me
This Parent and Child Class is a two-part program designed to both introduce infants to the water and help parents keep a healthy lifestyle after the introduction of a baby into their lives. The first half of the class is a moderate intensity water aerobic workout given while the babies sit in their strollers on the deck. Each week a different parent rotates out and monitors the children during this part of class. The second half of the class the infants are brought into the water with their parents for games, songs, and basic water movements.
Lap Swim 101
This program is designed for lap swimmers who are looking to improve endurance, time or efficiency in the water. Staff provides critique, information and workouts twice a week. Participants learn how to use a pace clock as well as what they need to improve in their target areas. This program is offered Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 5-6:30pm.
Stroke Workshops
The first Saturday of every month, Frenger Pool offers Stroke Workshops for lap swimmers. This program consists of video taping and stroke analysis, written workouts, drills and “coaching” from lifeguards who run the clinics.
100 Mile Swim Club
This program is designed to spice up your swimming routine. Swimmers log their miles with pool staff and track them on a chart. Upon completion of 100 miles, participants receive a T-shirt. Swimmers may begin anytime during the 2008 year and have an unlimited time to complete the program.
Community Classes
Aquatic Staff offers classes to the community in Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR. People interested in any of these classes should call Frenger Pool. |
