The Southern New Mexico Natural History Foundation was established to support the activities of the Las Cruces Museum of Natural History. We work to promote community awareness of the Museum and its programs and seek opportunities to increase the effectiveness of the Museum in its public outreach and educational activities. The Foundation raises funds through memberships, donations, endowments, and grants. Foundation resources are used for the maintenance of permanent museum displays, including the care and feeding of live animals, and for the acquisition of new exhibits. The Foundation also funds some museum programs and activities for the adults and children of Las Cruces and helps to bring hands-on science activities and programs to area schools.

Education programs at the Museum supported by the Foundation include the Descubra el Desierto monthly lecture series, the Desert Treks field trips, and the monthly Sky Safari program. The museum offers weekly science programs for children and adults at the museum; these include Scaly Slimy, Animal Encounters, Fetch, and the Saturday Science Class. We also sponsor Nature Camp, a summer day camp with nature study, field trips, and overnight camping experiences for students of various ages. The Foundation is now publishing the Museum of Natural History’s newsletter, the Cenozoic Times.

Foundation Membership:

Membership in the Southern New Mexico Natural History Foundation is open to anyone who wishes to help us support the Museum’s natural history and science programs. New ideas are welcome. We offer a number of membership categories for students, individuals, and families. Business memberships are also available, and individuals or businesses who wish to do so can also become sponsors of some of the animals in the Museum’s live exhibits. All memberships are fully tax deductible. Members will receive a membership card, the Foundation’s newsletter, The Cenozoic Times, and will be eligible for discounts on classes, camps, and field trips organized by the Museum. The Foundation membership card will also give you and your family free or significantly discounted admissions to about 300 museums and science centers throughout the United States - and a few foreign countries. (A list of participating facilities can be found at www.astc.org.) A Foundation membership can make a nice gift to friends in other cities (especially those with children), and to those traveling with their families.
