Common Snapping Turtle

Common Snapping Turtle

Size - 8 - 18.5 inches (20 - 47 cm).  Its relative, the alligator snapping turtle, averages about 26 inches (66cm).

Habitat and Range
- Found in freshwater habitats, on the bottom of a deep pool or in shallow water buried in the mud.  Its range extends from eastern North America to the Rocky Mountains, and south into Mexico and Ecuador.

Diet
- An omnivore, including aquatic plants, fish, frogs, rodents, insects, crayfish, clams, snails, salamanders, snakes, birds, and small mammals.

Did you know?
- When it seizes prey larger than itself, it may drag it under water to drown it.
