Railroad DaysRailroad Days

The third annual Railroad Days celebration will be held at the Las Cruces Railroad Museum May 6-8, 2010.

National Train DayThis year's Railroad Days will coincide with National Train Day (May 8), which celebrates the anniversary of the opening of the first Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869, in Promontory Summit, Utah. We also celebrate the arrival of the first train in Las Cruces, April 26, 1881.

This year we look back at the 100 years of railroading in which our historic Santa Fe depot has participated. It was built in 1910 by the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe in response to a request from City Council. Over the years the depot has seen a visit from President Roosevelt, the comings and goings of passengers, the arrival of V-2 rockets headed to White Sands Proving Grounds, countless tons of freight, and the New Mexico Rail Runner Express train. The Rail Runner will be returning this year for the Saturday, May 8 Community Day and visitors can visit New Mexico’s newest commuter train (no rides) from 10am until it leaves the museum at 3pm. Also on display will be our newly acquired FW&D wooden caboose (no tours). Please see the Schedule of Events for more information.

Rail Runner at Railroad Days

The Doña Ana Modular Railroad Club will be running their model train layouts on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. We have set Thursday aside as Senior Appreciation Day and invite local senior groups to participate. Friday is Student's Day. Teachers can schedule a time for their students to tour the museum, visit with Modular Railroad Club members, and have fun with educational activities. The public is welcome to visit during regular hours each day. In addition to the train tours (no rides), Saturday's events also include historical re-enactors, musical entertainment, food and information booths, and educational activities.
