Floodplain InformationWelcome to the City of Las Cruces' Flood Information web page. In this page you can find helpful information on the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA). This includes information on Elevation Certificates, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), the Community Rating Systems (CRS), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Flood Maps, Letters of Map Change (LOMC) and much more. What's NewProposed - Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM)The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has issued proposed Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRMs). These maps are preliminary and subject to change. The DFIRMs are available for review at the Branigan Library (200 E. Picacho Ave.), at the Doña Ana County Government Center (845 N. Motel Blvd. - room 1-250) and the City Offices Center (575 S. Alameda Blvd.— rooms 202 & 248). They are also available on the City’s web page. Just click on “Preliminary Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map” when you get to the City’s web page - www.las-cruces.org. FEMA has put the DFIRMs 90-Day appeal period on hold until further notice. When they do notify, it will be posted in the Las Cruces Sun News newspaper, in the Classifieds section under Legal Notices. The City of Las Cruces will get notification to it’s citizens via the City’s Flood Information web page at http://www.las-cruces.org/public_works/engineering_services/CLC%20flood%20zone%20map.shtm, so please, keep checking for updates. Once FEMA posts the notice it will begin the 90-appeal period. Residents with structures that may be identified to be in the proposed Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) or flood zone should purchase a flood insurance policy for the structure during this period. Purchasing during this period will permit the structure to be grandfathered in. Grandfathering in a structure allows the owner to have a much lower premium after the DFIRMs are made official. Flood insurance may be required for structures located in the SFHA. Please contact your insurance agent to get more details. National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and the Community Rating System (CRS)The City of Las Cruces participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Participating communities start off as a Class 10 community, in the NFIP’s Community Rating System (CRS) Program, and strive, through various outreach projects, to work their way to a Class 1 community. Every time a community moves a class (i.e. from a 10 to a 9, from a 9 to an 8, etc…) the residents with a regular NFIP Flood Insurance Policy get a 5% reduction in their premiums. As of October 1, 2007 the City of Las Cruces is a Class 7 community which gives a 15% reduction in NFIP Flood Insurance Policies. The reduction only applies to policy starting after October 1, 2007, but contact your insurance agent to get more information & make sure your policy has been adjusted to reflect the NFIP / CRS discount.
