What Is Graffiti?
Graffiti vandalism consists of intentionally and maliciously defacing
any real or personal property of another with graffiti or other inscribed
material without the consent or reasonable ground to believe that there
is consent of the property owner.
What's New?
A convicted graffiti vandal must pay back over $8,000 in property
damage to property owners! Adrian Ornelas was convicted of 11 counts
of unauthorized graffiti! On April 6, 2005 Adrian Ornelas was sentenced
to the following:
- $8,000 restitution to property owners
- 5 years of supervised probation
- $25 per month probation costs
- 50 hours of community service
*A violation of any of the above, or a violation of local, state or
federal laws will result in 8 years and 6 months imprisonment followed
by 1 year on parole.

The City of Las Cruces Codes Enforcement is tackling the graffiti
problem in Las Cruces . You can help! You can make a difference!
Please report any graffiti and any information which will assist the
City in the graffiti battle. After citizens report graffiti a Codes
Officer will take graffiti report. Graffiti vandalism removal on private
property is the responsibility of the property owner. It is in the
best interest of the property owners to remove graffiti immediately
after a graffiti report has been taken.
The City of Las Cruces Codes Enforcement thanks those citizens whom
report graffiti and take pride in their neighborhood.
What Can You Do?
Graffiti vandalism attracts more graffiti! Graffiti vandalism has
numerous negative consequences for a city.
Graffiti vandalism in Las Cruces can decrease property values, discourage
business development and tourism. Graffiti vandalism attracts crime
and street delinquency to our area; slowly replacing the sense of ownership
once common amongst residents with fear, anxiety and frustration.
Take ownership in your neighborhood by following these steps:
- Report the graffiti vandalism by calling 528-4723 or
online at www.las-cruces.org
- Remove the graffiti vandalism after you report it and
a Codes Officer does a graffiti report.
- Maintain a clean yard.

How Can We Prevent Graffiti? Property owners can take several precautions in the effort to deter
graffiti vandalism.
- Report and remove graffiti within a 24 hour period of
it appearing
- Install outside motion lights around your property
- Maintain a clean property
- Landscaping options: shrubs, thorny plants and vines
will effectively restrict vandal access to commit graffiti vandalism
