Goals

To promote awareness of and participation in City government,
service and activities with particular emphasis on efforts to enhance
quality of life.
- To engender internal and external support for the City’s
endeavors.
- To depict the City as dedicated to quality service that is customer-oriented
and accessible public service that is responsive and supports community
outreach and economic development, the distinctive multicultural
heritage of Las Cruces
Strategies
The Public Information Office seeks to accomplish these goals through:
1. Identifying newsworthy endeavors
A. Covering City Council Meetings
- Reporting on upcoming meetings (by news release, direct tips
to the media, or by scheduling councilors or staff on radio programs
to discuss agendas) to encourage public participation.
- Reporting on highlights of City Council actions to inform public
of new policies, programs, and public works.
B. Searching for newsworthy people/programs
- Meetings with PIO Team of division heads, department heads
and others involved in media and promotions activities.
- Identifying city projects, programs and employee expertise
for news tips, radio spots and civic club talks
- Following up on reports to the City Council.
- Soliciting news items through the City Worker and e-mail notices.
C. Prioritizing news items to support goals
- Maintain/update short list of key programs and events annually
- Review list with City Manger
2. Producing/disseminating news to media (media relations)
3. Producing/disseminating news/info to employees (internal)
4. Producing/disseminating news/info to city residents (external)
5. Conducting other marketing and communications activities
6. Exploring ways to use emerging technologies
7. Supporting other units' communications efforts
Mission
The mission of the Public Information Office is to support City’s
missions and strategic directions through news media relations, internal
and external communications, and marketing activities.

Council Meetings
Regular council meetings are televised the 1st ,3rd and
4th Mondays of the month @ 1:00 p.m. Work sessions are televised
the 2nd Monday of each month @ 1:00 p.m. Rebroadcasts of
council meetings and work sessions are @ 6:30 pm on Thursdays.
