Repairs to Munson Senior Center Heating System Continue

-- Thursday, January 28, 2010 at 08:49
Crews with the City of Las Cruces Facilities Department continue to make repairs and modifications to the heating system of the Munson Senior Center, 975 S. Mesquite St. that has been closed since Monday, January 25th.

The center was evacuated after a carbon monoxide leak associated with the heating system boiler was discovered. A total of 16 people, including center staff and seniors, were given oxygen at the scene by the Las Cruces Fire Department. No serious injuries or illnesses are reported.

The center will remain closed at least through Feb. 7th.

In the interim, activities and meals for senior citizens will continue to be provided at the City’s three other senior sites: Mesilla Park Community Center, 304 West Bell Ave.; Benavidez Community Center, 1045 W. McClure and Eastside Community Center, 310 N. Tornillo.

For general information about senior programs call 575/528-3000 or 575/528-3012 to make meal reservations.

The 35-year old center has been operating with the original HVAC system. Approximately $478 thousand in state funding that had been appropriated to renovate the center, including the replacement of the existing HVAC system, has been identified for potential cutbacks by the state legislature.

The public will be notified of the center’s reopening.
