Celebrating a Century of Service

Operations

Las Cruces Fire Department provides services to mitigate the effects of a variety of emergency situations, including medical emergencies, physical entrapments, fires, and releases of hazardous materials. The provision of these services is the responsibility of the Operations Division.

Resources within the Operations Division include 123 uniformed men and women, who deliver service from six fire stations, staffed 24-hours per day. Most engine companies are staffed with a lieutenant, driver/operator, and three firefighters. The department also staffs two ladder truck companies with a lieutenant, driver/operator, and two firefighters. Additionally the department has a hazardous materials unit, a technical rescue unit, two airport crash trucks, a water tender, three reserve engines, and a mobile command vehicle.

The Las Cruces Fire Department responded to 13,431 requests for help from the public during calendar year 2007. Approximately 75% of these calls were to provide emergency medical service. All engine and ladder companies are equipped to deliver emergency medical care. Firefighters are trained to the minimum level of Emergency Medical Technician–Basic and many have obtained licenses at the Intermediate and Paramedic levels.

Operations Division Firefighters inspect all commercial facilities in Las Cruces on an annual basis. In addition to emergency work, Operations Division members provide a wide range of services to the community, including blood-pressure screening, tours of fire stations and apparatus, and fire and life safety presentations within the community.
