Adolf A. Zubia, Fire Chief of the Las Cruces Fire Department. The department has 129 sworn personnel and approximately 9 million dollar budget.
Chief Zubia started his fire service career with Las Cruces Fire Department in 1986. Progressed through the ranks and served as the City’s Fire Marshal from 1992 through 1998. He served for three years as Dona Ana County Fire Marshal from October, 1998 until appointed Fire Chief for the City in September 2001. As the County Fire Marshal he had administrative oversight of 16 volunteer fire departments and approximate 350 volunteer fire fighters.
Chief Zubia received his bachelor’s degree in Journalism from New Mexico State University and has completed work towards a Master degree in Public Administration. In 1999 Chief Zubia successfully completed the four year Executive Fire Officer Program at the National Fire Academy. In July, 2003, he received a Certificate for participating in a three-week Harvard’s fellowship annual program for Senior Executives in State and local Government.
Chief Zubia has served on the ICC Board of Directors since 2003. He served as a past Board of Directors for the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) and on the Board of Directors for the International Fire Code Institute (IFCI). In addition to these boards, Chief Zubia served on a number of committees for ICBO and IFCI.
Chief Zubia is currently the President of the New Mexico Fire Chief’s Association and was instrumental in the creation and development of the New Mexico Fire Marshals Association (NMFMA) an ICC Chapter organization and served as their President for the first five years of the organization (1997-2002).
Chief Zubia is also currently serving on the International Association of Fire Chief’s (IAFC) Professional Development Committee (PDC) and the IAFC Fire and Life Safety Section (FLSS).
