Tree Steward Program Graduation 2018

The City of Las Cruces Parks Recreation Department is excited to announce the graduation of 16 new Tree Stewards from its volunteer tree care program. The graduation ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 22 at the Frank O’Brien Papen Community Center.

The public is invited to a commemorative tree planting in the Community Center’s adjacent park to celebrate the new volunteers. The graduating volunteers have completed 28 hours of training from area tree experts. In return for the training, volunteers are asked to dedicate 40 hours of volunteer service, assisting the City in maintaining and growing its community forest, planting trees in parks, and conducting educational events like Earth Day and Arbor Day.

The program was started in 2012 by Les Finley (former City Parks Maintenance Horticulturist) and Craig Fenske (former Keep Las Cruces Beautiful Program Coordinator) and has graduated more than 75 Tree Stewards. The program is now overseen by Jimmy Zabriskie, City of Las Cruces Community Forester.
