Councilor Sorg at NLC 2018
Las Cruces Mayor Pro Tem Gill Sorg recently joined 2,300 city leaders and delegates from around the country for the National League of Cities' (NLC) annual Congressional City Conference, in Washington, D.C.
Every year the event brings together federal, state and local leaders to focus on the most pressing challenges facing the nation’s cities. This year’s conference theme, "Rebuild With Us," reflects NLC's campaign to partner with the federal government to rebuild and reimagine America's infrastructure. Sorg’s participation in the event brought Las Cruces perspective and voice to discussions about roads, bridges, high speed internet service, affordable housing, parks and much more.
Sorg also voiced the concerns of Las Cruces to Capitol Hill in meetings with members of Congress that were arranged by NLC’s federal advocacy staff. As the nation’s largest and most representative membership and advocacy organization for city officials, NLC raises a collective voice to ensure that Congress and the Administration make local issues a priority.
Speeches from U.S. Labor Secretary R. Alexander Acosta, U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, Federal Communications Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel, provided insights into the administration’s plan for cities. Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Tim Scott (R-SC), and Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD) commented on shared concerns about infrastructure and other city issues.
