City Launches Operation “Just Weed It” 2017
The City of Las Cruces will engage in a massive, city-wide weed removal project called “Just Weed It” beginning Monday, Oct. 2.
“You will see between 50 and 60 City employees from the Parks & Recreation Department, Codes Enforcement, and Streets & Traffic Operations participating in weed removal operations along medians, streets, sidewalks and other City properties,” said Parks & Recreation Department Director Sonya Delgado.
According to Delgado, the two-month-long project will begin along major east-west, then north-south thoroughfares, and will move on to smaller streets and arterials. Large, City-owned properties will be handled by contractors.
“The goal is through one major effort, to help rid the community of the weed nuisance on that erupted following a string of monsoon rain events,” Delgado said. She said areas sprayed with herbicides will appear bluish green for approximately two-weeks and a computer program will track areas where weed mitigation has occurred.
She said Operation “Just Weed It” falls under the City Council’s newly-adopted strategic plan of results-oriented plans for sidewalks, parks, median landscaping and facilities.
