LCPD’s Response to Chan’s Attorneys

The Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) and City of Las Cruces (City) are aware of a request from the defense attorney representing Tai Chan; a request that the U.S. Attorney’s Office investigate LCPD about the Tai Chan murder trial. Chan is a former Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputy accused of the 2014 shooting death of fellow Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputy Jeremy Martin.

The LCPD and City denies the criminal defense attorney’s allegations of police corruption and obstruction of justice. The whistleblower allegations have already been denied by the City in the current ongoing civil litigation. Should the U.S. Attorney’s Office decide to investigate these allegations, the LCPD and City will cooperate fully.

Chief Jaime Montoya stated, “All employees of LCPD are committed to transparency and maintaining community trust. We will work with any investigating agency”.
