Overview
Mission
Keep Las Cruces Beautiful (KLCB) focuses on the 3 E’s; education, eradication and enforcement. Our program is dedicated to keeping our city beautiful through litter and weed control; graffiti eradication and prevention activities; community recycling efforts; and neighborhood and community wide beautification projects. Community involvement is a key component of our program empowering the citizens of Las Cruces to take action in their neighborhoods.
Advisory Group
Keep Las Cruces Beautiful Advisory Group was created to obtain broad ownership and support in the community. The Advisory Group continues to meet quarterly. Representation includes neighborhood associations, chambers of commerce, NMSU, the schools and community members.
Keep America Beautiful
Keep America Beautiful believes that each of us holds an obligation to preserve and protect our environment. Through our everyday choices and actions, we collectively have a huge impact on our world. It's really a simple concept, but one with far reaching effects. Keep America Beautiful follows a practical approach that unites citizens, businesses and government to find solutions that advance our core issues of preventing litter, reducing waste, and beautifying communities. The diverse American landscape consists of many different "community environments," each with their own interconnected needs and challenges. With a national network of more than 1,200 local affiliates and participating organizations, we combine education with hands-on stewardship to address the needs of communities on an intensely local and effective level.
- KAB Mission
Engaging individuals to take greater responsibility for improving their community environments.
- Guiding Principles
As a recognized leader in community improvement, Keep America Beautiful is guided by these principles:
- Education: This is the key to encouraging positive behaviors toward community improvement.
- Individual Responsibility: Improving communities, their environment, and quality of life all begins with personal responsibility -- individuals becoming more engaged as citizens and stewards of the environment.
- Public-Private Partnerships: Broad-based community alliances are essential to achieve sustainable community improvement.
- Volunteer Action: By engaging volunteers we extend the reach of our education and multiply the impact of our actions.
- KAB Focus
Keep America Beautiful changes behaviors and improves communities through a focus on:
- Litter Prevention: Defining litter, identifying the causes, and reducing it by organizing cleanups, and promoting proper handling of discarded waste in our communities.
- Waste Reduction and Recycling: Reducing the impact of solid waste in our communities through integrated programs including responsible consumerism, source reduction and reuse, recycling and education about landfills, composting and waste-to-energy.
- Beautification and Community Greening: Improving the visual aspects of our communities through programs that beautify and naturally clean our environment including community gardens, restoring vacant lots, highway and shoreline beautification, urban forests, native and wildflower plantings, and graffiti prevention and abatement.
New Mexico Clean and Beautiful
Keep Las Cruces Beautiful is an affiliate of New Mexico Clean and Beautiful (NMC&B). A portion of KLCB funding comes from NMCB. The New Mexico Clean and Beautiful program was created through the Litter Control and Beautification Act of 1985.
The program is a part of the New Mexico Tourism Department. New Mexico Clean & Beautiful is charged with eliminating litter from the state to the maximum practical extent and the primary duty is to allocate funds generated by the Litter Control and Beautification Act, derived from a $.50 motor vehicle registration fee, to communities and Keep New Mexico Beautiful, Inc.
The New Mexico Clean & Beautiful program operates with two full-time employees: an Executive Director and an Assistant Director. As the state Keep America Beautiful, Inc. (KAB) affiliate program, NMCB provides leadership through the coordination of events, such as statewide cleanups e.g., Great American Cleanup, and Trek for Trash. Promotional materials such as trash bags, litterbags, t-shirts, etc., are also provided to the communities for their programs. In addition, the New Mexico Clean & Beautiful program also manages a public awareness campaign statewide.
