The Las Cruces Fire Department is paramilitary in style. Cadets are instructed in the skills of Firefighting, Hazardous Materials Response, Technical Rescue, and Vehicle Extrication.
Strict discipline, teamwork and safety are the foundation of the academy. Cadets must excel in academics, skill evaluations, physical fitness and teamwork to successfully complete the academy. The high standards established by the department create an atmosphere where a commitment to excellence is essential.

Fire Cadets receive the following certifications upon completion of the academy:
- IFSAC Firefighter I & II
- ICS-100, 200
- NIMS IS-700
- IFSAC Hazmat A & O
- NM EMT-Basic Training (subject to change)
