|
What it is
This is the first generation of The Mayor’s Top 50 Teens that will recognize and celebrate deserving teenagers. Its mission is to create a community that values teens and promotes a positive image of them.
The program’s goals are to:
- Recognize a diverse group of high school teens who normally do not receive recognition.
- Collaborate with youth-serving organizations and businesses that are advocates for youth.
- Achieve prominent exposure for promising teenagers in the community.
- Send a strong message to teens that they are important to the community.
Who can apply
Teens completing 9th, 10th or 11th grades may be nominated during the spring of each year by teachers, counselors, friends, clergy or family (but not their parents). The nomination process is publicized through local media, all schools, Branigan Library, and a variety of youth and community organizations. Typically, the program seeks nominees who:
- Overcame a significant obstacle in their lives.
- Perform Community Service.
- Demonstrate scholastic achievement.
- Set a good example and are positive role models.
How Teens are Selected
A group of volunteers from the Optimist Clubs will review all nominations this year and gradually narrow down the list until 50 teens are selected as laureates into the program. Teens will be notified , professional photographs will be taken. The Mayor’s Top 50 Teens will be publicly announced in September and will become representatives of the program.
