What is Codes Enforcement?

The Las Cruces Police Department’s Codes Enforcement Section enforces codes and regulations that promote the health, safety and welfare of all citizens.     The mission is to preserve the environment and beauty of our city.

Codes Enforcement officers work with the residents, businesses and other organizations to:

  • Empower our community through education and awareness of city ordinances
  • Facilitate compliance with city ordinances
  • Develop outreach programs
  • Initiate special programs targeting specific problems.                                                                         

 

Enforcement:

Ordinances that we enforce include, but are not limited to:

Inoperable vehicles
No person shall park, store, leave or permit the parking, storing, or leaving of any motor vehicle of any kind which is in an abandoned, wrecked, dismantled, inoperative or partially dismantled condition – whether attended or not – upon any private or public property within the city for a period of time in excess of 72 hours.

Nuisances
Weeds, trash, rubbish, abandoned materials, all unnecessary loud noises, stagnant water, and dilapidated structures/walls. No person may maintain, use, place, leave or permit any nuisance to remain on any public or private property.

Obstruction of Streets and Sidewalks
All trees must be trimmed to a minimum, of eight feet above the street or sidewalk. Sidewalks must be kept clear of shrubbery, plants, rocks or any type of debris.

Littering
It is unlawful for any person to dump or throw litter in any manner or amount. It is unlawful to throw or discard any litter from a motor vehicle.

Recreational Vehicles Restricts the parking of Recreational Vehicles in residential areas with the exception of brief periods of time in connection with activities such as a planned trip.
