The President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing
In December 2014, President Barack Obama launched the Task Force on 21st Century Policing to identify the best means to provide an effective collaboration between law enforcement and local communities that reduces crime and increases trust. In response to several of the Task Force recommendations that speak to the importance of technology and transparency, in May 2015, the White House launched the Police Data Initiative (PDI) which is a community of practice that includes leading law enforcement agencies, technologists, and researchers committed to improving the relationship between citizens and police through uses of data that increase transparency, build community trust, and strengthen accountability.
The question then is how do we bridge these issues: concern about fairness and concern about effectiveness in making sure that police officers get the support they need. That’s why I set up a Task Force on 21st Century Policing last year that came up with detailed recommendations that departments and officers can implement to keep building trust... It talked about having open data and independent investigations to make sure the system was fair...

Datasets by Law Enforcement
The release of data sets by law enforcement represents concrete steps toward building trust and speak to a larger shift in the culture of policing that is at the core of the Task Force’s recommendations. Some of the information contained in our data sets are from some of the most asked requests from our community; we believe this initiative will increase trust and communications between our employees and the community we live and serve. We will continue to evaluate and add more information as it is developed.
Las Cruces Police Department Data Sets
- Officer-Involved Shootings (XLS)
- Citizen Complaints 2016
- E1-C1 (XLS): Formal investigation which is generated when a subject makes an allegation of misconduct of a serious or non-serious nature, or non-performance of duty, against an employee.
- E1-C2 (XLS): Allegations of a non-serious nature and the subject elects not to pursue a formal investigation. The subject may request notification be made to the supervisor for informational purposes only.
- EI-C3 (XLS): Allegations of a non-serious nature where the subject is unable to articulate a bona fide complaint. This category is used for concerns regarding police conduct that do not rise to the level of a Formal External Investigation due to a lack of valid facts or no apparent General Order violations. This classification includes preliminary inquires: a review of all facts and evidence is conducted but ends short of requiring the accused officer(s) to give statements about the complaint.

The Las Cruces Police Departments compiles annual reports covering crime statistics within the city and complaints against employees of the department. Those reports are open to the public and available for you to view.
The Las Cruces Police Department provides up-to-date information and statistics used to map burglary trends within city limits. This Burglary Map is available free of charge.
In 2009, the City of Las Cruces first contracted with an outside auditor to provide feedback on the Las Cruces Police Department. Since then, the City has utilized the services of a Police Auditor (PDF) to provide bi-annual reports to City Council. View our Police Auditor Reports from 2016 and 2017.
